Shades of Blood is a vampire novel, that because of the way that vampire behaviour has been updated into a much more modern manner, becomes the most frightening vampire book around. Vampires have become marginalised. They can no longer simply get away with killing humans, the police have started to realise that they can go after them, with suitable weaponry, of course, and they do. As Septimus realises that this world will never be the same, for him again, and he can no longer kill the little virgins he loves to drink his craving for power grows.
